Upgrade to Windows 8 and you may be surprised to find that you can no longer play video DVDs. Unlike previous versions of Windows, Windows 8 doesn’t include built-in support for playing DVDs. Truth be told, DVD playback is a legacy feature in an age of pervasive connectivity and new Windows device types like Ultrabooks, tablets, and hybrid PCs that lack optical drives in the first place. But it’s easy to add DVD playback to Windows 8 if you really need it.

1. Use a Licensed DVD Player

If you purchased a new Windows 8 computer that comes with a DVD drive, your computer’s manufacturer has likely included DVD-playing software with your computer. To examine all the software on your computer, use the All Apps screen. Press the Windows key to access the Start screen, right-click anywhere on the Start screen, and select All Apps. Scroll through the list of installed applications and look for a DVD-playing program.

2. Purchase the Windows 8 Media Center Pack

If, however, there’s not a configured DVD-playing app on your Windows 8 computer, you need to purchase from Windows app store a media player that support DVD playback. If you have Windows 8 Pro, you can purchase the Windows 8 Media Center Pack to activate Windows Media Center and DVD playback on your computer. By the way, Windows Media Center, which includes DVD playback, is no longer included in the original Windows 8 OS. Microsoft is offering the Windows 8 Media Center Pack for free until January 31, 2013 – click here to get it. The Windows Media Center, however, does not work with Windows RT.

You may also install a third-Party app like VLC media player to enable DVD playback on Windows 8.

3. Rip DVD to Windows 8 supported format

Despite that there’re several DVD Player apps available for Windows 8, many new Windows 8 Ultrabooks, tablets, and hybrid PCs lack of optical drives. If you have a Microsoft Surface RT, Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga, or ASUS Vivo Book, it’s better to rip DVD to MP4 and access the digital version of the movies. This can be done on a Windows 7, Vista, 2000, or XP PC. Just get a Windows 8 DVD Ripper (Currently 30% off) and follow the process below:

1. Press load icon to crack copy protection and import DVD movie from the optical drive.

2. When the DVD is loaded, Press on the Format bar. Now choose a format that you’d like to export. For Window 8 tablet/Ultrabook you may set "Windows > Microsoft Surface Windows RT H.264 Video (*.mp4)" preset,

3. Press the big Convert button to rip DVD to Windows 8 RT/Pro supported MP4 video.

When a DVD is ripped into MP4 video, you can add it to share folder or home media server and have your Windows RT/Windows 8 device to access it wirelessly. You may also further rip Blu-ray movies to the media center if you like – just get a 40% off Blu-ray Ripper for Windows 8 instead.
